What do lessons cover and what are the fees?

Lessons cover a comprehensive range of concepts and skills, including music reading, sightreading skills, rhythm, technique, theory, interpretation, and practice skills. Each lesson is planned in advance to ensure that the student progresses steadily and with confidence, and with the accomplishment of specific goals.   Fees are $40 per 30-minute lesson and $50 per 40-minute lesson payable by the month. An extra charge to offset travel time applies if lessons are in your home.  

 

What happens if the student has to miss a lesson?

First, please inform me of an absence as soon as possible.  Student-missed lessons are not refunded or credited, but a variety of options for makeup lessons include: 

  • Rescheduling within the same week/month.
  • Subsequent lessons may be extended over 2-3 weeks if a gap between students exists/can be widened.
  • Practice Analysis and Lesson Video: Before the lesson you are canceling, video yourself or your child playing once through the assigned pieces. During the normal lesson time I will create a video with feedback on those pieces, and explain and demonstrate aspects of new pieces to begin.   
  • Request to swap lesson times with another student.

 

What happens if the instructor has to miss a lesson?

If I must miss a lesson, I will make it up at a mutually convenient time or credit future fees. 

 

Is a piano required?

A keyboard or acoustic/digital piano in the home is necessary prior to starting lessons. Students may start lessons with a smaller than standard keyboard, but by the second year of instruction, I advise upgrading to an acoustic piano or larger (ideally full–size) digital piano.

 

What is expected in terms of practice?

Before starting lessons, it is important to consider how practice will fit into your/your family's routine. Will the student be able to practice at least 5 days per week for 10 to 15 minutes minimum and increase over time?  Children often need guidance initially to establish a routine and follow through on their assignments.  Very young children, particularly those doing Perfect Pitch training, will need direct assistance with practice tasks.

 

What other procedures should I know about?

  • Come to the door on time but not early,
  • Return promptly to pick up your child.
  • Students should bring all books recently in use.
  • Students should wash hands before or upon arrival.
  • Fingernails should be kept short to ensure proper hand position.
  • Please avoid the use of fragrances/scented products when coming for lessons.
