Keyboard lessons are more than just learning to read music and playing pieces. Here are some of the ways music study can be an important influence on students, both musically and personally.
Instills Self-Discipline
Music lessons are probably the very first adventure the young child will experience in realizing that only he/she alone can accomplish the results desired, and help instill a sense of responsibility which carries over into other activities.
Increases Concentration Span
Learning to play a keyboard instrument requires strict attention. To effectively keep a steady beat, play the correct notes, pedal properly, and interpret all dynamic marks, the student is forced to continually look ahead one or more measures. Music demands the ability to concentrate, at first in small segments, then in gradually larger portions of time.
Develops Coordination
Music improves coordination between thought and action. It requires mental alertness, accuracy, and good memory.
Provides Emotional Outlet
Everyone has the basic need to express themselves–young and old. Music is called the universal language because it has no boundaries in expressing all the emotions of life such as joy, sorrow, and excitement.
Instills Self-Confidence and Poise
Keyboard playing gives the student a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction.
Becomes a Foundation for Other Musical Pursuits
Piano is a basic instrument that serves as a foundation for other musical activities while growing up and also during adulthood. Knowledge of the keyboard is a valuable asset when singing in a school vocal group or church choir. The musicianship learned at the keyboard also is a big help when learning a band or orchestra instrument.
Love and Appreciation of Music
Probably the most lasting value of keyboard study is the love and appreciation of music that is fostered during lessons. The important roots of good musical taste are also formed during keyboard study. These are values that endure throughout adult life.
